Aspiring Leaders

The NYS & CSEA Partnership for Education and Training (Partnership) is pleased to announce the Aspiring Leaders course for CSEA-represented NYS employees. The goal of this course is to help participants develop leadership skills that will enhance their ability to lead successful careers in New York State government.
 

Course topics will address a wide range of workplace issues and professional development needs including: leading self and others, dealing with resistance, resilience, emotional intelligence, building coalitions, communication, building relationships, coaching and providing feedback, goal setting, decision making, problem solving, professionalism, accountability, and ethics.
 

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Employ leadership strategies that focus on self-awareness and motivation to coach employees through transitions. 
  • Apply principles of emotional intelligence to build effective relationships and teams.
  • Prepare a team for success by setting clear, achievable goals that are aligned to the agency’s mission and NYS code of ethics.

Course Information

This is a three-day course; attendance is required all three days. 

Participants will receive a DiSC Self-Assessment to complete in advance of the course that will help them identify their leadership style. 

Seats are limited to 30 and are processed on a first come, first served basis.

Eligibility

Free for NYS employees! 

Employees are eligible to participate in the Aspiring Leaders courses if they are:

  • A CSEA-represented New York State (NYS) employee (ASU/02, OSU/03, ISU/04, or DMNA/47).
  • A CSEA-represented employee working in a local government, school district, state authority, or the private sector, as space permits.
  • A NYS employee (previously in the ASU/02) serving a probationary period in a transition title or traineeship supported by the Partnership (MC/06 or PS&T/05).
  • A NYS employee in a Management/Confidential (MC/06) clerical or secretarial title, as space permits.

Enroll Through SLMS

The Partnership's Aspiring Leaders class is available through the Statewide Learning Management System (SLMS). SLMS is a web-based application used to manage, deliver, and track training for all NYS employees.

Note: Copying the SLMS Class Code will help you find the class quickly in SLMS.

Enroll with the Partnership's Aspiring Leaders Application Form

If you are unable to enroll through SLMS, complete the Partnership's Aspiring Leaders application form:

  • Download and share, print, or save the application form.
  • Complete the application by following the directions on the form. Discuss your interest in taking a class with your supervisor. 
  • Obtain your supervisor's approval to attend the class.
  • Send your application to the Partnership by using the email address, mailing address, or fax number provided on the form.

 

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Are there any prerequisites?

A: Participants must complete the DiSC self-assessment prior to attending the class. There are no other prerequisites related to position, salary grade, or other classes.

 

Q: How many seats are available?

A: Seats are limited to 30 to allow for an optimal learning environment. Registration is on a first come, first served basis. 

 

Q: If I can’t get in now, then what?

A: Because seats are limited, and demand is high, participants who register beyond the 30-seat capacity will be waitlisted. The Partnership will offer this program again and seating for future sessions will be prioritized based on waitlist status. Waitlisted participants will be contacted by the Partnership when the next offering becomes available.

 

Q: What if I am having issues registering through SLMS? Is there a paper application?

A: If you are experiencing difficulty in registering through SLMS, you may fill out the Aspiring Leaders application form and mail or fax your application to the Partnership.

 

Q: What is the DiSC® self-assessment? How will I receive it? Do I need to do it?

A: The DiSC® self-assessment is a behavior assessment tool which centers on four personality traits. Two weeks before the class date, you will receive an email with information about how to access and complete your DiSC® self-assessment. The DiSC® self-assessment is foundational to the other topics in Aspiring Leaders. If you cannot complete it by the deadline, please contact the Partnership.

 

Q: How do I pass? 

A: Participants will pass the Aspiring Leaders course if they attend and participate in all three days of training. 

 

Q: What if I need to miss class time, come in late, or leave early?

A: Attendance is required all three days. If you are unable to attend all three days, please wait to register until we provide an offering that fits your schedule.

 

Q: Do I need approval to attend?

A: Yes. Supervisory approval is required to attend the course during work hours. 

 

Q: Will the Partnership reimburse me for travel or meals?

A: No. The Partnership will not reimburse participants for travel or meals. Participants may speak with their supervisor about whether their agency will reimburse for travel or meals.

 

Q: Are meals provided?

A: No. Participants may bring their lunch or go off-site to purchase meals. Lunch is one hour in length.

 

Q: Is parking free?

A: Yes, parking is free at the New Windsor site.

 

Q: Will I receive a certificate for completing the course?

A: Yes. Certificates will become available for printing once your attendance has been confirmed and recorded in SLMS. This may take three to four weeks after the class has ended.

 

Q: Will I receive a grade?

A: No. Participants either pass or fail based on attendance and participation in all three days.
