Adult Education Basics Program

The Spring 2021 Adult Education Basics (AEB) Program uses an immersion approach to help CSEA-represented NYS employees improve current job-related knowledge, learn new skills for improved work performance, and enhance their learning. Due to COVID-19, courses this semester will be conducted remotely. Both the Math Refresher 1 and Effective Reading Skills 1 courses will be taught using both live instruction and group online discussions.

Hosting AEB Courses Remotely

To accomplish hosting AEB courses remotely, the Partnership will be using Canvas. Canvas is a cloud-based learning management system that will enable participants to communicate with their instructor and classmates, access all course materials, attend lectures, and work in groups remotely. A Canvas Student Orientation Webinar will be held on January 27, 2021, to help students with this transition. Additional sessions will be scheduled if students require help with this online format.

Due to the new changes, the policy for release time for attendance has been updated. Instead of 6 hours one (1) day a week, courses will be held 3 hours, two days a week.

Participants in the AEB Program will receive an individual assessment of their basic reading, writing, language, and math skills. This assessment will be scheduled by appointment with each individual applicant the week of February 8th (Math Refresher 1) and April 12th (Effective Reading Skills 1). The AEB courses are scheduled to begin in February and end in May 2021.

Note: There will be the opportunity to utilize "office hours" every Wednesday, for a one-on-one discussion with their instructors.
