College Credit: Alternative Approaches and Ways to Save Money– One-Half Day

Would you like to attend college but don’t have the time or money? This course will explain non-traditional ways to obtain college credit that could save you time and money. This course is for individuals who have NOT completed a college degree program. You will also find out about the New York State and CSEA negotiated Tuition Benefits. Participants will learn how to:

  • Take distance learning and online courses
  • Consider credit-by-examination programs to obtain college credits
  • Use external degree and other non-traditional college programs
  • Save money by considering non-traditional approaches
  • Use the Partnership’s Tuition Benefits Program effectively

Financing Your Education – 3 Hours

How to afford a college degree program or non-credit certificate program is a dilemma often faced by many people. Paying for school is one of the barriers cited most often by working adults to returning to school. Participants will learn how to:

  • Identify ways to pay for college courses and to pay less for educational programs
  • Use federal and state financial aid programs available to part-time adult students
  • Reduce the amount of federal income tax you may have to pay through the American Opportunity and the Lifetime Learning Tax Credit programs

Returning to Learning – 3 Hours

Participants who are thinking of returning to school will learn how to prepare themselves, how to research education programs, and how to overcome some of the barriers to further education. Participants will learn how to:

  • Become effective consumers of educational services
  • Make decisions about the type of program they need
  • Use a range of both traditional and non-traditional programs

Using the Tuition Benefits Program– One-Half Day

Have you thought about returning to school to work on a degree but are not sure how to pay for it? Are you interested in taking a few courses to become eligible for a Civil Service examination? Do you want to take courses to improve skills for your current job? This program will provide information and advice about using the Partnership's Tuition Benefits Program to help pay for courses. This course is open only to CSEA-represented New York State employees.

The Tuition Benefits Program provides educational benefits to CSEA-represented New York State employees, enabling them to achieve greater career mobility and promotional opportunities, improve job skills, and prepare for future state workforce needs. Participants will learn how to:

  • Determine their eligibility
  • Identify the different types of benefits available
  • Apply for their benefits
  • Use their benefits
  • Determine the types of courses covered
  • Determine benefit coverage limits
